What is a Kua number in Feng Shui?
The Kua number (also written Gua number) is a single digit from 1 to 9 calculated from your birth year and gender. In the Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) school of Feng Shui it identifies your personal trigram, your element, whether you belong to the East or West group, and your four lucky and four unlucky compass directions.
How is the Kua number calculated?
First add the last two digits of your birth year and reduce the result to a single digit. For births from 2000 onward, men subtract that digit from 9 and women add 6; for births before 2000, men subtract from 10 and women add 5, reducing again to one digit. A Kua of 5 becomes 2 for men and 8 for women. Because the Feng Shui solar year begins around 4 February, anyone born in January or the first days of February uses the previous calendar year.
What are the four lucky directions?
Each Kua number has four auspicious directions: Sheng Chi for success and wealth, Tian Yi for health, Yan Nian for love and relationships, and Fu Wei for personal growth and stability. The remaining four compass directions are considered less favorable.
